Inference on Categorical Survey Response: A Predictive Approach
We consider the estimation of finite population proportions of categorical survey responses obtained by probability sampling. The customary design-based estimator does not make use of the auxiliary data available for all the population units at the estimation stage. We adopt a model-based predictive approach to incorporate this information and make the estimates more efficient. In the first part of our paper we consider a multinomial logit type model when logit function is a known parametric function of the covariates. We then use it for the prediction of non-sampled responses. This together with sampled responses is used to obtain the estimates of the proportions. The asymptotic biases and variances of these estimators are obtained. The main drawback of this approach is, being a parametric model it may suffer from model misspecification and thus, may lose it’s efficiencies over the usual design-based estimates. To overcome this drawback, in the next part of this paper we replace the multinomial logit type model by a nonparametric model using recently developed random coefficients splines models. Finally, we carry out a simulation study. It shows that the nonparametric approach may lead to an appreciable improvement over both parametric and design-based approaches when the regression function is quite different from multinomial logit.
A dual-polarized quasi-optical SIS mixer at 550 GHz
In this paper, we describe the design, fabrication, and the performance of a low-noise dual-polarized quasi-optical superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer at 550 GHz. The mixer utilizes a novel cross-slot antenna on a hyperhemispherical substrate lens, two junction tuning circuits, niobium trilayer junctions, and an IF circuit containing a lumped element 180° hybrid. The antenna consists of an orthogonal pair of twin-slot antennas, and has four feed points, two for each polarization. Each feed point is coupled to a two-junction SIS mixer. The 180° IF hybrid is implemented using a lumped element/microstrip circuit located inside the mixer block. Fourier transform spectrometer measurements of the mixer frequency response show good agreement with computer simulations. The measured co-polarized and cross-polarized patterns for both polarizations also agree with the theoretical predictions. The noise performance of the dual-polarized mixer is excellent giving uncorrected receiver noise temperature of better than 115 K (double sideband) at 528 GHz for both the polarizations
A 530-GHz balanced mixer
We report on the design and performance of a 530-GHz balanced SIS mixer, the first balanced mixer in this frequency range. This quasi-optical balanced mixer utilizes a cross-slot antenna on a hyperhemispherical substrate lens with eight superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions and a 180° lumped element IF hybrid circuit. The local oscillator (LO) and the radio frequency (RF) signal, orthogonal in polarization to each other, are coupled to the mixer using a wire-grid polarizer. The noise performance of the mixer is excellent, giving an uncorrected receiver noise temperature of 105 K (DSB) at 528 GHz
Pseudorandom Generators for Width-3 Branching Programs
We construct pseudorandom generators of seed length that -fool ordered read-once branching programs
(ROBPs) of width and length . For unordered ROBPs, we construct
pseudorandom generators with seed length . This is the first improvement for pseudorandom
generators fooling width ROBPs since the work of Nisan [Combinatorica,
1992].
Our constructions are based on the `iterated milder restrictions' approach of
Gopalan et al. [FOCS, 2012] (which further extends the Ajtai-Wigderson
framework [FOCS, 1985]), combined with the INW-generator [STOC, 1994] at the
last step (as analyzed by Braverman et al. [SICOMP, 2014]). For the unordered
case, we combine iterated milder restrictions with the generator of
Chattopadhyay et al. [CCC, 2018].
Two conceptual ideas that play an important role in our analysis are: (1) A
relabeling technique allowing us to analyze a relabeled version of the given
branching program, which turns out to be much easier. (2) Treating the number
of colliding layers in a branching program as a progress measure and showing
that it reduces significantly under pseudorandom restrictions.
In addition, we achieve nearly optimal seed-length
for the classes of: (1) read-once polynomials on
variables, (2) locally-monotone ROBPs of length and width
(generalizing read-once CNFs and DNFs), and (3) constant-width ROBPs of length
having a layer of width in every consecutive
layers.Comment: 51 page
Collider design issues based on proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration
Recent simulations have shown that a high-energy proton bunch can excite
strong plasma wakefields and accelerate a bunch of electrons to the energy
frontier in a single stage of acceleration. It therefore paves the way towards
a compact future collider design using the proton beams from existing
high-energy proton machines, e.g. Tevatron or the LHC. This paper addresses
some key issues in designing a compact electron-positron linear collider and an
electron-proton collider based on existing CERN accelerator infrastructure
An collider based on proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration
Recent simulations have shown that a high-energy proton bunch can excite
strong plasma wakefields and accelerate a bunch of electrons to the energy
frontier in a single stage of acceleration. This scheme could lead to a future
collider using the LHC for the proton beam and a compact electron
accelerator of length 170 m, producing electrons of energy up to 100 GeV. The
parameters of such a collider are discussed as well as conceptual layouts
within the CERN accelerator complex. The physics of plasma wakefield
acceleration will also be introduced, with the AWAKE experiment, a proof of
principle demonstration of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration, briefly
reviewed, as well as the physics possibilities of such an collider.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the DIS 2014
